Born in Tel Aviv in 1951, Ron Arad attended the Academy of Art in Jerusalem and the Architectural Association in London. In 1981 he founded the design studio One Off Ltd with Caroline Thorman and in 1989 set up “Ron Arad Associates”, a business dealing with architecture and design. In 2008, Ron Arad Architects was established alongside Ron Arad Associates. In 1994, he opened the Ron Arad Studio in Como, a design and production studio, which operated until 1999. In 2002 Ron Arad was awarded the title of Royal Designer for Industry (RDI) for ‘sustained excellence in aesthetic and efficient design for industry’. In 2011, he was awarded the London Design Medal. He was Professor of Design at the Hochschule Wien from 1994 to 1997 and later Professor of Product Design at the Royal College of Art in London until 2009, when he became Professor Emeritus. In 2013, he was elected Royal Academician by the Royal Academy of Art in London. Ron Arad’s constant experimentation with materials such as steel, aluminium or polyamide and his radical new understanding of the form and structure of furniture objects place him at the forefront of contemporary design.
