The Dutch Masters Cupboard
The Dutch Masters cupboard is the newest concept of Diederik Schneemann. It fits with the mind-set of his previous works in the Cherished Collection, being design/art pieces made from objects originating from personal collections like Smurfs, matchboxes or perfume bottles. Diederik loves to work with existing materials that carry something extra, something that differentiates the one existing object/material from another. Diederik wants to let us think about how we perceive the value of materials. It is still common that only shiny golden or marble objects are perceived as luxurious. In these changing times, Diederik looks at it in a different way.
The Dutch are famous for their renowned painters like the ‘Dutch masters’, but not every Dutch painter made it to international recognition. Many of their paintings ended up stored in attics or cellars. Diederik recognizes the love, passion, time, and effort these Dutch artists putted in their creations. In his view, these paintings contain something more than just its material properties and have a different, unmeasurable value.
The backside of the canvases form the outside of the cupboard, creating an interesting display of old wooden frames where you can find some notes, like creation date or locations of the artist. The cupboard invites you to open it and look inside, discovering the images that take you from Dutch landscapes and old sailing boats to portraits and colourful flowers. This way we can appreciate these old paintings in a very different way
