Pleat Mirror
The Pleat Mirror is a piece of functional art that explores the technical and aesthetic possibilities of 3D printing. This object consists of 98% Bavarian sand, an extremely soft white quartz natural material. To transform sand into a structural material, it is first 3D-printed within a box. Then, a resin binder helps to solidify the desired shape. Finally, the oxidization of the binder in reaction to the sand makes the piece turn black. Despite its fragile and tactile appearance, an amazingly strong object is born. A beautiful piece that captures movement in a moment of time, freezing it forever.
This mirror is part of the Sand in Motion collection; a series of eight collectible objects which reveal the technical possibilities and the beauty of sand. The collection includes several vases, a chair, a large mirror and side tables. Every piece is named after a particular movement that shaped their organic and kinetic identity.
