Colonna BF – C2
An installation by Benedetto Fasciana and Antonino Sciortino In the realm where architecture converges with myth and poetry, Benedetto Fasciana and Antonino Sciortino exalt Sicily’s Mediterranean heritage through their creation, COLONNE. These sculptures pay homage to Sicily’s architectural zenith during the Greek and classical era, reminiscent of the peripteral Doric temples of Agrigento and Segesta. A column, in its essence, is a vertical element with a circular section, serving a constructive purpose of support while symbolizing the enduring spirit of humanity.
For Pindar, in the Hellenistic era of Heracles, columns embodied the metaphor of mythological borders; to Christopher Columbus, they signified the symbolic transcendence of physical boundaries, leading to new realms of discovery and possibility. From an expressive standpoint, the column stands as a paramount architectural element, uniquely interpreted by each civilization through modifications in elements, proportions, and ornamentation. COLONNE, an installation of six monolithic columns, epitomizes simplicity and substance.
Their circular, grooved forms, crafted from a blend of clay and rod iron, engage in a compelling dialogue of solids and voids, shapes, and dimensions, while their achromaticity eloquently evokes the ethereal Mediterranean light. Benedetto Fasciana’s approach is additive, shaping each column from white refractory clay to enhance its inherent earthy beauty. Antonino Sciortino employs a subtractive method, crafting sculptures from ductile cast iron rods with differentiated densities. This approach allows him to express a narrative of essential shapes that convey a sense of verticality, emphasized by a white patina that simulates the erosion of time. COLONNE is a limited edition of 10 pieces for each column.
