‘Literary Concrete’ is a collection of functional sculptures made from stone, concrete and books, sealed together to form a poetic material. Selected, beloved books are stacked like bricks and drowned in a concrete soil criss-crossed with scars, giving rise to a series of objects with an evocative presence. Invoking the love of literature and the promise of the book as a protective shield, ‘Literary Concrete’ celebrates culture as an essential framework. Sealed in a modern archaeology constructed of selected titles and imperfect concrete, perforated with iron rods, these functional sculptures of radical expression are softened by evocative poetry, oscillating between brutalism and the languor of words. Slices of paper-thin stone run through them, transforming them into tables, bookcases or bookends. Each of the wild stones is chosen with an upcycling approach in homage to Mother Earth. ‘Literary Concrete’ continues Aline Asmar’s personal quest for poetic materiality in her architectural practice, created at Laboratorio Morseletto, Italy. Each of the books embedded in the concrete of Noah table is a founding moment of one’s inner world. “Béton Littéraire” is a collection of functional sculptures made from stone, croncrete and books, sealed together to form a poetic material.
