Foguinho candle – space heater
Foguinho candle powered space heater. In a time of global uncertainty with extreme rising cost of gas and electricity, Foguinho was designed to warm up a small space with a minimal amount of combustion, and to create a warm ambience/object around which people can come together.
The concept of this small space heater is based on the natural occurrence of when the sun heats up a stone: it traps and radiates heat, even long after the sun has set. The heater consists of 2 unglazed terracotta domes; one small closed interior dome, and one larger outer one, which has a hole in the top. The domes are placed on a bottom tray, containing 2-4 lighted votive candles.
The ceramic domes absorb the thermal energy of the candles and convert it into radiant space heat; hot air created by the candles circulates between the domes and escape through the hole in the top of the outer dome, heating up the air outside it. The air trapped inside the domes will get absorbed by the ceramic clay body and will radiate heat even after the candles have gone out.
The heater will stay hot for hours and heats a small area very effectively. It will not however heat up large spaces, but will take away the humidity and worst of the cold in smaller environments. It is great as a foot of hand warmer. Safety is of course an issue, as all objects containing an open flame, and the heater should be used under careful supervision. It uses 1 to 3 candles, but could also use small alcohol lamps instead of candles. Produced with traditional pot throwing techniques.
