Urushi Laque 1
As the series entitled Cocteau shows, this discovery of fresh possibilities for Laque (Lacquerware) came out of meeting with a craftswoman who had returned from Japan where, as artist in residence, she had learnt the techniques of Urushi, a traditional lacquer work differing not only by virtue of the cultures from which it stems (Chinese, Korean and Japanese) but also by the essentially organic nature of its technique. Its very singular treatment of surface sets this series at a frontier between two cultures. One of which is ostentatious and luminous, the other secretive with darkness as the corner stone of an aesthetic based on refinement and delicacy.
