Plastic Rivers no.6 Ganges
Ten years after the launch of PET Lamps, Álvaro Catalán de Ocón, recovers one of his favourite materials, polyethylene terephthalate (PET), to create Plastic Rivers, a monumental collection of rugs woven with yarn made from recycled plastic debris. The rugs portray precise renderings of aerial images of some of the planet’s most polluted rivers.
This design project is a collaboration between the Madrid-based designer and the Spanish company GAN Rugs, dedicated to the creation of handmade products with natural or recycled fibers. Both Álvaro Catalán de Ocón and GAN believe in sustainable, eco-friendly processes and the use of local craftmanship, and they are keen on raising awareness around social and environmental issues.
This rug features the precisely scaled map of the region where the rug is made, by local artisans, and with PET bottles collected in the surrounding area.
The piece was also the winner of Ro Plastic Prize 2021 in the category of Urban and Public Furniture Design.
