ecoBirdy
ecoBirdy is a Belgian company that redesigns plastic waste into beautiful furniture pieces. Through its patented upcycling process that started from material analyzation to design concept and production process, discarded household plastic is given a new life to inspiring furniture pieces.
After a two-year-long study that resulted in a recyclable plastic material called ecotylene®, in 2018 ecoBirdy launched its first collection of children’s furniture made with discarded plastic toys. Charlie Chair, Luisa Table, Rhino Lamp and Kiwi Container, along with a School Programme and the story book “Journey to a new life” were designed with an educational purpose to engage youngsters on social and environmental responsibility. Moreover, not only ecoBirdy’s products are made of repurposed materials, but also their packaging is recycled and recyclable. As Rhino and Kiwi resemble the shape of two endangered animal species, in 2020 the recycled cotton Coral Blanket was added to ecoBirdy’s product collection to draw attention on ocean’s coral bleaching due to climate change. Continuing this awareness-raising process, Climate Change Statistics, the installation presented at RoGUILTLESSPLASTIC in 2021 during Milan Design Week, is the brand’s last statement to acknowledge the climate crisis. Today ecoBirdy is not a children’s design brand anymore, as its new products Richard Armchair, Judy Side Table and Mabo Plate initiated an ethical “growing-ups” line to home décor, proving that upcycled plastic waste could fit any needs.
