Hlabisa Bench – Pink Diamond

Designed in collaboration with Thabisa Mjo the piece features a backrest woven by Zulu master weaver Beauty Nxongo. Renowned for her basket weaving Beauty has work featured in both the Smithsonian and Metropolitan Museums in the USA as well as being part of numerous collections around the world.
The piece is the first example of this weaving technique being used in anything that is not round. The process is highly sustainable and part of a circular economy, the palm is foraged locally and sold to the weavers on a local market. The weavers hand dye the material, using plants they harvest themselves from the land they live on. Nothing is brought from outside the small rural community they work and live in.
