Ceramic sequences XL
Ceramic sequences is a beautiful collection of hand-painted ceramics. Here, Andrea Santamarina combines two traditions: the Mediterranean practice of painting on ceramic plates and the Japanese style of Ukiyo-e. In particular, he takes inspiration from erotic scenes by Hishikawa Moronobu, a seventeenth century artist.
While in the East sexual subjects weren’t taboo, Western culture appeared more conservative. Even recently works of classic authors are censored by covering parts or scenes that are considered impudent. Each dish is part of an imaginary animation sequence and vindicates the freedom of expression through beauty. Being able to speak about a subject that is indissoluble to the human experience is very important; and that is why it has always been present in the history of art.
