CHAAC is a new multi-functional American Pool table designed by Hillsideout and produced in collaboration with Hermelin Billiards Milan – leader in the industry since 1825.
The American Pool table has at least three functions: Firstly – As a traditional Pool table – for professional use, too. Secondly – The American Pool converts to a table for aperitif use by putting the coveringseparé on top. Thirdly – When the American Pool is in use the covering-separé becomes an artistic boiserieseparé which you can put in front of a wall or in the middle of a room.
The content of the table are as multiple as the function. Whilst the American Pool table with its wooden form reminds of Mayan temples, the separé features a mask inspired by the Maya’s rain divinity Chaac for whom the Pre-Columbian people sacrificed the winning players of the pelote game. We found visual and philosophical associations between pelote and the billiards game and therefore combined the two worlds through images in the wooden openings of the separé. Historical images taken in the former factories of Hermelin Billiards Milan are mixed with Pre-Columbian vegetation and universal symbols like holes, snakes, numbers, water and heaven.
The importance of “game”, its social meaning as well as the meaning of sacrifice can be found in each angle of the piece. Definitely a very narrative and anthropological piece!
The installation Chaac features also our new limited edition liquid colour Küken lamps – a series that celebrates colour and its uniqueness when combined with transparent materials like resin, in this case with bakelite – an early plastic developed in New York in 1907. Lamps (found in the factories of former East Germany) built in the Sixties for heating newborn chicks in the coop, are transformed into elegant and simple contemporary lighting. The lamp is covered with coloured resin and held by a handcrafted wooden structure. The shape of the wooden frame is a hexagram and each side has a 30 degree angle. This is the work of fine carpentry, being something difficult to do.
Americal Pool CHAAC can be bought with separé or without
Hillsideout [antique art design] is a joint project by Andrea Zambelli and Nat Wilms which came to life in 2009 out of a mutual concern and discomfort for the degradation of abandoned sites in the Italian Apennines. Hillsideout expresses the need to transform the state of uselessness but also forgotten stories into practical functionality.View designer’s page
