Milan Pekar is Ceramic designer and maker, owner of Milan Pekar Studio in Prague, Czech Republic. He was born and educated in Prague(AAAD)and currently hold a position as assistant professor to Maxim Velcovsky in Atelier Ceramics & Porcelain in AAAD Prague(Applied Art University Prague). For the last 4years Milan has been concentrating on developing Crystalline Glazes. The glaze he found that so fascinating he spend all his available time experimenting for new colour combination. After spending many countless hours and overcoming many disastrous results, finally, came to the satisfactory formulation. On going search for new colour resulted, recently, some unusual glazes especially in metallic Crystalline Glazes that are very rare.
Crystalline Glaze is a mixture of ceramic glaze ingredients is applied on vase and fired to high temperature. Manipulating temperature by upping, downing and also maintaining(soaking) few hours at a certain temperature so that this creates an environment for crystallines to grow on the surface of vase. So in short, a false environment is created for crystallines to grow on the surface of vase as in real, it takes thousands years. This isn’t easy process and during cooling down period many can crack. Bigger vases have high chances of cracking but Crystallines grow differently in certain shapes, certain sizes also in different oxides and react and grow differently again with certain ingredients. So this means each vase is unique on it’s own and never have two the same. Crystalline Glazes technique isn’t new but what makes Milan’s work different from other Crystalline Glaze is that he managed to develop in many colour combination and designs shapes of vases to suit certain colours to show them at their best.
